7.1 million Americans took online for-credit classes  in the year 2013,  and a large number of these students completied their entire degree online. According to pthe latest survey of online higher education by the Sloan Consortium about 33.5% of college students now take at least one course online. This is the highest percentage yet.

Online education is relatively new phenomenon, but it’s growing fast. There are now more online colleges than ever, offering tremendous value for students. Online education has become mainstream nad employers now report that they don’t see much difference between degrees obtained online and degrees obtained through traditional brick-and-mortar universities and colleges.

What is Online Learning/Distance Learning?

Distance learning is a way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with a teacher in the classroom.  In recent years the advent of the internet and widespread use of the computer has led to a huge growth in distantly delivered tuition and study.

At undergraduate level distance learning usually means students engaging with learning materials at home or work.

These materials are produced by the university, college or learning provider and are either sent directly to the student or more usually today accessed via the internet.
Tutorial support is provided via a virtual learning environment, telephone, email or other electronic means.
There may be occasional face-to-face encounters with tutors and attendance at week-long summer schools.

Some Facts about online learning in the US:

The 2013-2014 year-to-year increase in the number of distance education students was 3.7%.
Public and private nonprofit institutions recorded distance enrollment growth, but these were offset by a decrease among for-profit institutions.
The percent of academic leaders rating the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face remained unchanged at 74.1%.
The proportion of chief academic leaders reporting online learning is critical to their long-term strategy reached a new high of 70.8%.
The adoption of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) is reaching a plateau, only 8.0% of higher education institutions currently offer one, another 5.6% report MOOCs are in the planning stages.

What are MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses).

MOOCS offer university-level courses without the need to complete an entire programme of studies, and are becoming increasingly popular. They offer a large number of students the opportunity to study high quality courses online with prestigious universities, often at no cost.
They are ideal for independent study and users can select courses from any institution offering them.
MOOCS do not always lead to formal qualifications. There are no entry requirements.
Video-based, they offer interaction either through peer review and group collaboration or automated feedback through objective, online assessments (including quizzes and exams).

What you need to know about MOOCs:
While most courses are free, some are fee-paying. Videos are normally short and much activity takes place on online discussion groups and forums.
Drop-out rates are high – up to 90%. Rates are marginally lower for paid-for courses.
A reasonable degree of computer literacy is needed.
Many MOOC users are graduates seeking to top up their skills and competences.

Are MOOCS for you?
Why you might be right for a MOOC:

They are low cost routes to accessing quality courses.
They can be combined with other study or work.
They are accessed from any computer at any location including your home.

Why a MOOC may not be for you:
MOOCS do not feed into a degree or other qualification but are self-contained.
Few students complete the courses.
Content from a MOOC offered by a university outside your home country may not match cultural and other conditions with which you are familiar.

Entry Requirements, Applying and Fees.

Some online courses such as those offered by MOOCs require no entry qualifications.
The majority of courses will have various specific requirements.
ust as you would do for any other degree, you should carefully research your choice of course and university.
In most cases, you will need to obtain entry requirements direct from the university or college.
You apply direct to the course provider.

A typical online admission procedure is:
Fill in the online application form.
You’ll receive a reply from the university or college.
The institution will want confirmation that you have the qualifications you say you have. After checking your certificates, they will send you confirmation that you’ve been accepted onto the course.
Enrolment usually takes place a few weeks before the course starts. You get the opportunity to select the modules you wish to study and pay the first instalment of your course fees.
On receipt of payment the university or college will email your confirmation and you can begin your studies.

Online College Costs (US):

In the US, each university online course cost around $200 or $400 per credit hour. On top of that, several classes have application fees in the $30-$50 range. Others had “online course” fees or “technology fees, presumably to pay for the learning management systems and other kinds of computer-related infrastructure. Almost all online degree programs charge this technology fee, but the amount of those fees can vary widely from school to school. Some schools charge for books.

Just like traditional colleges, the cost of online colleges can vary greatly based on many factors. It is impossible to give one figure for the yearly tuition of online school, versus yearly tuition at a traditional college. For example, a year of tuition at a private online college like Western Governors University is $5,780, and a private online college like Capella University costs $22,912.

However, we have compiled a list of the most affordable online colleges, including total costs, for you to browse freely.

Also, keep in mind that online students often save money on gas and housing, as they don’t need to relocate or commute. If you decide to keep your day job, you will also have the benefit of bringing in a salary while you attend college.

Pros and Cons on online studying – Why Choose Distance Learning?

The main advantage of distance learning is that it allows you to fit your learning around your work and home life.

You can usually also set your own pace of study.
It is your decision as to when and where you study.
It doesn’t matter where you live – you can gain a degree from anywhere in the world.
As with a full-time degree, students may find that they gain useful, transferable skills, such as planning and research.
A distance learning course often costs less than a full-time degree.

With an online degree, international students have the ability to complete their work on their own time. Classes usually consist of weekly readings and assignments that need to be completed at the end of that specific week. This gives the student an entire week to review their work whenever they are available, be it after work, at night, or on the weekend.

Another major benefit to online degrees is the delivery method of class notes, readings and assignments. In lecture courses in the classroom, students must take notes during their class time while also trying to listen to the professor. This often leads to students missing some parts of the lecture and having to go to fellow classmates to fill in any holes in the notes they missed. In online classes, many programs offer class notes every week. A common misconception about online courses is that there is a disconnect between the professor and the student. This is anything but true. Professors are an email or phone call away.

The downside is that you will not enjoy the conviviality of being on a campus and rubbing shoulders with fellow students on a daily basis. Loneliness and feelings of isolation should be avoided however by frequent online contact with tutors and taking part in virtual forums, virtual help groups and discussion rooms.
Distance learning providers usually offer dedicated support to their online or distance learning students.

Accreditation

You can study undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level associate courses via distance learning.
Universities and colleges ensure that their distance learning programmes and qualifications are of the same high quality as campus-based programmes.
